Cell phones have the ability to receive short text messages, called short message service (SMS),
also known as text message, text messaging, text paging, cell phone messaging,
or cell phone email. SMS text messages can usually be no longer
than 160 characters.
The maximum text message length includes headers
(to:, from:, and subject: lines) in addition to the message body. If an email
sent to a cell phone is longer than the number of characters your cellular carrier permits,
the e-mail will get cut off
at the limited number of characters or broken into multiple SMS messages.
SMS messages can be sent to cell phones from any other cell phone, any e-mail
address account or from a web site form at the cell phone providers web site.
When someone
sends an e-mail message to the cell phone's email address, it will get turned into an SMS text message and sent to the cell phone, usually within seconds after it was sent.
To send or receive cell phone SMS text messages, all you need is to find out the cell
phone's email address (below).
Figuring out a cell phone's SMS text messaging email address is easy.
First, you need to know the 10 digit telephone number. Simply add the @
symbol and the cell phone provider's URL after the 10 digit cell phone number.
When sending SMS text messages to a cell phone, do not use the 1 in front of the area code and do not use hyphens - or
parenthesis () in the cell phone number/SMS text message address.
