A Social Security Number (SSN) consists of nine digits in three fields separated by hyphens: 111-22-3333. The first three-digit field is called the "area number." The central two-digit field is called the "group number." The final four-digit field is called the "serial number."  The area numbers are assigned to geographic locations.

For people born in the U.S., the Social Security Number is registered in the state where you were born and the Social Security Number indicates that state.  For recent immigrants, the social security number should match up with the state or territory in which you were living when you received working papers.
