Do You Need a Mesothelioma & Asbestos Lawyer?Although almost everyone has been exposed to asbestos, however, most people do not become ill or get mesothelioma from exposure to asbestos. Mesothelioma is an asbestos disease. Most people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma, have usually worked in jobs where substantial exposure to asbestos occurred over long periods of time. Some people are diagnosed with mesothelioma after substantially less exposure. In fact, mesothelioma has been documented in family members of workers who brought asbestos home on their clothing, skin or hair after coming into contact with the asbestos. These family members are usually also exposed to asbestos over long periods of time. Symptoms of mesothelioma usually do not appear until 20-30 years after exposure to asbestos, but the average lifespan after mesothelioma diagnosis is less than 24 months. The only known cause of mesothelioma is from exposure to the mineral Asbestos. When asbestos is inhaled in the form of dust particles it slowly begins eating away at the lining of your lungs causing the deadly cancer. Mesothelioma is a disease that is almost 100% preventable, simply by avoiding exposure to asbestos. Asbestos use dramatically increased during World War II with use in shipyards and continued to be used everywhere after the war. Mine workers, engineers, pipe fitters, steel workers, auto mechanics, people and the construction and building trades, and people in many other professions were all exposed to asbestos over long periods of time. More than 5,000 different products containing asbestos were manufactured. Manufacturers of products containing asbestos knew that many workers who came into contact with asbestos containing products would ultimately suffer and die from mesothelioma. Despite the fact that manufacturers were aware of the dangers, they continued to profit from manufacturing asbestos containing products over the last 50 years because it was cheaper than finding a replacement product. The Consumer Products Safety Commission banned asbestos in the late 1970s for use in wallboard patching compounds and artificial ash for gas fireplaces because the fiber could easily be released during use. In 1989, the Environmental Protection Agency banned all new uses for asbestos. Uses established prior to that time were still allowed. Domestic consumption of asbestos has declined largely because of public fear of the dangers, but there still isn't a total ban on asbestos. Asbestos is still imported and used. A forecast by the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER), in April, 2003, projected the total number of American male mesothelioma cases from the years 2003 to 2054 to be approximately 71,000. This number does not take into consideration the World Trade Center disaster on September 11, 2001, when millions of New Yorkers were potentially exposed to air filled with carcinogenic asbestos particles. These mesothelioma cases may also take years to appear. If you or a family member is suffering or has suffered from mesothelioma, you can be certain that this disease was caused by exposure to products containing asbestos or manufacturing processes using asbestos and that the manufacturer was fully aware that mesothelioma would be contracted by some of their workers and consumers coming into contact with the asbestos. You should speak with a mesothelioma asbestos lawyer immediately.
Since mesothelioma symptoms from asbestos exposure can take up to 30 years to appear, if you or a family member has even been exposed to asbestos products or manufacturing processes using asbestos, you should see a mesothelioma lawyer immediately. Simple medical testing can show whether a person has contracted mesothelioma.
