Medical Malpractice is not driving up the cost of health care!
National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine Press Release 11-29-99 blames the majority of medical errors on the way the health system is organized. Their press release states medical errors kill 44,000-98,000 people in U.S. hospitals each year and claim that even using the lower estimate, more people die from medical mistakes each year than from highway accidents, breast cancer, or AIDS and more than 7,000 deaths annually (exceeding those from workplace injuries) occur from medication errors that take place both in and out of hospitals. - The Myelin Project is an international grassroots organization whose mission is to accelerate medical research on myelin repair. Myelin is the white matter coating our nerves, enabling them to conduct impulses between the brain and other parts of the body. It consists of a layer of proteins packed between two layers of lipids. Myelin is produced by specialized cells: oligodendrocytes in the central nervous system, and Schwann cells in the peripheral nervous system. Myelin sheaths wrap themselves around axons, the threadlike extensions of neurons which make up the nerve fibers. Each oligodendrocyte can myelinate several axons. - Proneuron Biotechnologies is the first company to harness the power of the body's own immune system for the treatment of debilitating central nervous system (CNS) disorders.Rehabilitation Research Center

Non-Operatively Treated Bimalleolar and Trimalleolar Fractures: A Twenty Year Follow-up
- The American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS)Trimalleolar Fracture - Indications for Surgery - (Wheeless' textbook of Orthopaedics).
Trimalleolar
ankle fractures present a disabling injury for the patient and a challenge for
the surgeon.
Scientific Monthly Abstract - There is much debate on the
treatment of posterior malleolar fractures involving a percentage of the
articular surface. Most authors believe that the posterior malleolus needs to be
fixated when it involves 25%-33% of the articular surface, otherwise poor
functional outcome will result. Additionally, some feel that fractures below 25%
have no dire consequences on functional outcome and does not to be fixated. This
article addresses this topic.

Breast Injuries
(There isn't much on this topic) Blunt
traumatic mammary hematoma as part of a seatbelt syndrome
- with images.
Discussion - As with other conditions related to chest anatomy, crash forces are distributed more evenly in the presence of an air bag than with only a seatbelt or with no restraint. The low risk of implant rupture exists with allogenic or gel-filled implants, not flap procedures. While rupture has been reported anecdotally with seatbelt use, this phenomenon has not been noted to occur due to air bags. If a rupture occurs, a repair can be done. Flap reconstruction with native tissue is no more likely to be damaged than native breast tissue. The exact forces required to rupture an implant are not known, and might be an area for future research. The National Crash Analysis Center, The George Washington University Medical Center.
American
Medical Women's Association - Saline implants are firmer than silicone gel
implants. The rate of saline implant rupture is higher. The rupture of an
implant results in a sudden change in shape and loss of size in a breast.
Implants can rupture spontaneously, presumably due to age of the silicone
sheeting. They also may rupture as the result of trauma -- for example, hitting
the steering wheel in an automobile accident. Guidelines

Primal Pictures - Software that
specializes in 3-D computer graphics of human anatomy with color graphics
that are remarkable for their clarity and precision. I just received
the Interactive Knee which is absolutely amazing. It shows the knee
at various depths in various types of images such as 3d Model Mode; Topic
Mode with views for Anatomy, Surgery, Biomechanics & Radiology; and MRI
Mode. There are movies such as one which shows a doctor conducting
a McMurray's test. The view or movie is on the left side of the screen with
corresponding text on the subject, on the right. Everything is interactive
and changes to correlate with the word you click on. This is a fabulous program
for the medical profession or the personal injury attorney. While it would
be interesting for a lay person with a knee injury, it is easier to use with
a basic understanding of the knee and would require the lay person to spend
some time learning. I highly recommend this software. Primal Pictures, Ltd
