BED/MATTRESS

Personally Reviewed Tempur-Pedic Sleep Systems® - I had a very hard mattress and believe that it severely aggravated my back and hip pain which began from a car accident.  After hearing Dux Bed commercials on the radio claiming that a hard mattress is bad for your back, I decided to look for a product that could help.  I went to a Brookstone store and tried out the Tempur-Pedic mattress by lying on it for a few minutes.  I found it to be incredibly comfortable and nothing short of amazing, however, I will now be trying out a 5.5 pound density visco-elastic pressure relieving memory foam mattress from Bergad which is shipping one to my home, so I can sleep on it for real.  Bergad's website states the visco-elastic memory foam in their mattress is 5.5 pounds.  Tempur-Pedic said, on the telephone, that the visco-elastic foam density in their mattress is 5.3 pounds, which is a little less foam density and more than 2 times more expensive than Bergad which is $699 for a Queen size mattress as compared to $1,599 for a Tempur-Pedic Queen Classic mattress. (Tempur-Pedic has a very expensive advertising campaign).

The Tempur-Pedic mattress uses a 5.3 pound density visco-elastic memory foam which relieves pressure by conforming to the shape of your body.  The foam attempts to return to its original shape after the pressure upon the foam is released.  In other words, when you get off the bed, the foam returns to its original shape.  The ability of the foam to return to its original shape is what makes it conform to the shape of your body.  Additionally, the foam becomes softer when in contact with body heat.  The parts of your body that produce more pressure upon the mattress, such as your hip, will transmit more heat to the mattress in those areas.  Thus, the mattress will become softer in the area of your hip and will remain firmer in other areas.  Lying down on a Tempur-Pedic mattress feels exactly like what you would expect to feel if you were lying down on a cloud, because your body weight is distributed equally along your entire body instead of concentrated pressure points such as your hip.

When lying on it in the Brookstone store, I thought the mattress was the most comfortable mattress I have ever tried, however, I have a particularly large and heavy friend who slept on the mattress for short period of time and did not like it.  He said that after sinking into the mattress, he found it difficult to turn.  I would suggest that if you are overweight, you might try lying on the mattress at a store such as Brookstone.  If you buy the mattress from Tempur-Pedic, you can try out the mattress for 90 nights to see if you like it (be sure to read their generous return policy and 20 year warranty).  I'm sure that most people will find instant pleasurable sleep the first night they try it, however, if not I suggest that you try it out for the full tryout period allowed.  I'm sure that after just a few nights you will find that not only will your back problems substantially improve, but that you will come to thoroughly enjoy sleeping on the mattress.

Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep Systems makes several mattresses including:

Tempur-Pedic also makes a mattress overlay which should only be used if you have a mattress in good condition.  I use the mattress overlay which has been a substantial help for my back problems.  I'm now thinking about buying the Tempur-Pedic mattress.

I also tried the pillows.  The pillow comes in different shapes including a regular shape and some odd shapes that are made to fit your neck and head.  The only pillow that I found immediately comfortable was the conventional shaped pillow called the Comfort Pillow by Tempur-Pedicsm, which is more comfortable if you don't sleep on your back. If you sleep on your back, you'll probably find the shaped Tempur-Pedic Swedish Neck Pillows to be comfortable.  They even make slippers which should help your back quite a bit when walking around the house.

IMPORTANT INSURANCE NOTE:  If prescribed by your physician to reduce back pain, hip, knee or joint pain or to promote better circulation, a Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System bed may be covered by your medical insurance policy.  Check with your medical insurance plan for eligibility requirements.  Additionally, if you were injured in a car accident in a no-fault insurance state, you may be able to obtain coverage for your Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System bed if prescribed by your doctor.  A no-fault insurance company may deny the claim, however, if properly supported the claim will have to be approved.  To properly support a no-fault insurance claim to pay for a Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System bed, you need:

  1. A prescription from your doctor prescribing a Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System bed.  It will also be helpful to get a written report from your doctor explaining why you need a Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System bed;
  2. Medical documentation to prove you have an injury that will be relieved by a Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System bed.  An example of good medical documentation would be an MRI report showing a herniated disk or a bulging disk and an EMG report, performed by a neurologist, which shows a nerve injury;
  3. You need to prove that the injury was caused by the car accident.  This is accomplished by a written report from your doctor and can be addressed in the same report mentioned above.  To prove that your injury was caused by the car accident, the doctors report should say "the patient's injury is causally related to the motor vehicle accident", causally related being the magic words.

Many times, the no-fault insurance company will require your doctor to write a report, before the doctor can be paid.  If the insurance company requests your doctor to write a report, you do not have to pay for the doctor's report.  When asking your doctor to write you a prescription for a Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System bed, make sure includes in his report why you need the bed.  If the insurance company does not request the doctor to write a report and you need the doctor to write a report so that you can get reimbursed for a Tempur-Pedic Swedish Sleep System bed, you will probably have to pay your doctor to write the report.
